Michael Rodway Photography
I am a photographer based in Cornwall, but my work takes me wherever there’s a story to capture. Living just a stone’s throw from the coast with my partner Samantha, my daughter Ava, and our dog, Axel (named after “Axl Rose” and not my doing!!), I’m deeply connected to the wild beauty of Cornwall, its beaches, and the ocean breeze that so often sets the scene for my photography.
Outside of photography, you’ll usually find me embracing life in every way I can; whether that’s squeezing in some gym time, meeting friends or visiting foreign lands. I love life and the beauty of where we are so lucky to live, and I try my utmost to incorporate that into my photography.
I have been behind the camera for over 16 years, starting with high-end wedding photography across the UK and Europe. These days, I still take on a few weddings each year, choosing only a handful to keep the creative fire burning and photograph children, families, fairies and commercial photography for businesses.
When my daughter Ava was born fourteen years ago, I began seeing the world through new eyes, realizing how fleeting and precious childhood is. Family photography, for me, is about knowing the images I take today will be viewed long after I’m gone by generations to come. They are history made in a single moment for future generations to love.
My own family has had its challenges. When my mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I clung to the family photos we had from years past. One picture in particular, with all of us in our 80s glory—terrible hair and all—symbolised so much more than just a moment; It was a piece of our story, a time capsule of who we were. And that’s exactly what I aim to give to the families I work with—something timeless, something real, a memory preserved.
My Style of Photography
Now that you know a bit about me, let me share how I work. Photography should be a joyous and relaxed experience, especially with families and children. After all, no one looks back and says, “That shoot was fantastic, but wow, it was intense!”
The best photos come from moments of genuine joy and spontaneity, so I focus on making sure everyone feels comfortable, especially the children. When children are having fun, that’s when the magic happens. It doesn’t always have to be smiles; sometimes, the most powerful images are those with raw emotion—reflecting the real essence of the person in front of the lens.
I don’t just take photos; I capture the soul of the moment. It’s about finding the heart of the family dynamic, the quirks, the connections—those little things that make you uniquely you. When I can capture that, that’s when photography becomes something more, something artistic, and it’s a privilege to be able to do that for each family I work with.
