Info & Pricing

Understandably, I’m often asked questions about various aspects of a shoot: what happens if the weather is terrible? What should we wear? And all those niggling, important questions that you would maybe like answered prior to your shoot. I hope to address most of these here, but please remember that I’m here to support you throughout the process. Please feel free to call at any point to ask anything specific to you or that I’ve missed.

What should I wear?

One of the most frequently asked questions is about clothing. It’s a significant aspect of a shoot, and the right choices can significantly enhance the final images. Here are some do’s and don’ts to guide you.

  • Avoid logos on clothing if at all possible. Logos date quickly and detract from the overall picture. Our eyes like to read and assess, so they automatically zoom in on any logo or writing in an image.
  • Don’t go too fussy. Plain block colours are always strong, as are minimal pattern/ floral or cheque designs. Denim can look great on younger children, dungarees, etc. Think blues, mustards, and browns in autumn. Consider how family members will look next to each other and plan accordingly.
  • White! Bright white can be really hard to shoot with, so if at all possible, it’s much better avoided. White can often lose detail, and nice new white T-shirts are a bit of a nightmare for a camera!
  • Don’t worry too much. Teens are Teens, and children will sometimes want to wear what they want despite the best will in the world ( getting my daughter into a dress is on par with getting a man on Mars!)  Sometimes, we have to go with it. I will always be happy to discuss clothing and welcome the conversation. I would much rather plan with you to get the best from your shoot.

How long does it take?

Most shoots last about an hour, but much depends on the age and size of your group. I don’t limit the length of my shoots as its all about getting the best images and time is not limited. I do not charge by the hour and life isn’t all about money.

A young girl in a yellow dress sits by a tree in a field of purple flowers, holding a teddy bear and smiling.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

As we all know, the UK weather is a little unpredictable, particularly for those of us in Devon and Cornwall. The first thing to remember is that I do not want bright, sunny days! This surprises many people, but the sun casts shadows, makes everyone squint, and is a pain to get great lighting.

On sunny days, I will try to wait until sunset (the best images). This depends on the children’s ages and when sunset is. If they are young and it’s past bedtime, I will reschedule. I would rather reschedule a shoot than provide less-than-perfect images. My past clients know that I’m a perfectionist with light and won’t sell my soul to cram as many shoots as possible. Oddly, rain is usually less of an issue than the sun. If it pours down on a rare day, I’ll reschedule again and allow time for this in my bookings.

If I call a shoot-off due to weather, I will always confer with my client, reimburse the deposit, or work with them to arrange another day.

What if my young child has a tantrum on the day?

The dreaded child “hissy fit” – a mystical event that from time to time takes over small children and turns them from sweet smiling angels into monsters that are to be feared. It happens rarely, but it happens. There aren’t many of us who can say we haven’t had young children who, for no particular reason, decide they don’t want to play ball.

If it does happen to you, then there is very little point in trying to rescue a shoot for more than a few minutes, and, in consultation with you, I will call it off. I won’t charge for rescheduling, and we will shoot again when we mutually agree.

I have photographed children with learning difficulties, Autism, ADHD and many other conditions. They are children; I work around them with you!  It’s the nature of child photography.

” We would 100% recommend Michael – his photos are simply amazing. We’re so grateful for his patience – both with persevering with the weather and with a very ‘busy’ toddler who tends to glare daggers at the camera!”  –  James & Annabelle

The next bit!

So, for me, the shoot is just the start of the journey. The next step is the editing.  Generally, people don’t realise the work that goes into an edit, but it’s a much longer process than the shoot itself. It’s something I love doing, and it makes my work what it is. After about two weeks, I will have completed the edit and have a number of images for my client to view. I usually produce around twelve or fifteen images. You are able to pick any two of those images, included in your initial payment, from the comfort of your own home!

SALES!  I hate them just as much as anyone and will NEVER try to sell to you. We all have different financial circumstances, and I would much rather have my clients come back year after year than feel they overspent and don’t want to do it again. In short, it doesn’t matter to me if you have two images or fifteen. If you just want the two images you paid for as a deposit, that’s fine.

The goal of my photography is simple: to provide you with images you love. I never want anyone to feel pressured. My priority is for my clients to feel relaxed, happy and leave with the knowledge that they’ve had an amazing experience from start to finish.

Additional images are available for purchase. After you have decided which images you would like, I put the full-resolution digital images on a USB for you, share them on social media, or send them to relatives far away. I will tell you where my images are printed (I’m not affiliated with them), or if you have a tech phobia, I’ll gladly order them for you.
